A Dichroic Yellow lamp gets its color by heating a cadmium coating inside of the globe. This coating, when heated up, releases a gas with a specific shade of yellow. The gas, in turn, colors the light with about 5% lumen loss, A bulb with a yellow filter coating blocks almost all of the blue and violet light which amounts to about 25% of the lumen output.A dichroic bulb produces a "Selective Yellow" light which is felt by many to make it easier to see in bad weather. They were required in France from the mid 1930s to 1991 when the requirement was ended.

Cadmium is a heavy metal and its disposal in landfills exceeded the benefits provided to lighting the road on a foggy night. The development of Xenon Technology helped lamps to produce more light and overcome the loss of light caused by a yellow coating on the outside of the globe. This change has caused the reduced use of Dichroic Yellows bulbs to the point that most manufactures have discontinurd their production, and availability is limited to stock on hand.
